Szeged city centre flood protection system development

In 2006, when the Tisza crested at an unprecedented level of 1009 cm. The appearance of seepage water and the inadequate height of the existing bank wall highlighted the need to reconstruct the flood protection system. In 2014, we renovated a 2.1 km long dike section and built a 1.5 km long mobile wall system. The installed mobile dike provides full protection for the inhabitants of Szeged up to a water level of 1130 cm during flood events. The installation of the entire system requires 417 posts, 1,863 insertion beams, 1,050 bolts and 858 hold-down devices, an it can be completed in up to five hours as the flood approaches. This time is negligible due to the several days’ lead time in the forecast.
